Orus is a French commune with 25 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Foix and the canton of Sabarthès . The inhabitants of Orus are known as Orusiens.

geography

The small municipality of Orus is located high above the Vicdessos Valley in the Pyrenees , 25 kilometers south-southwest of Foix and about 15 kilometers north of the border with Andorra (as the crow flies). The municipality of Orus is part of the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Natural Park . The highest point in the municipality is the Pic de Boucarle at 1984 m above sea level .

The remote place, which can only be reached by a 350 m difference in altitude from the Vicdessostal, had more than 300 inhabitants throughout the 19th century, the decline began in the 1920s and reached its temporary peak in the 1970s when the municipality only still had 11 inhabitants.
