In the 19th century the community had mostly between 100 and 200 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture led to a loss of jobs in the 20th century and, as a consequence, to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lowest values of the last decades.
economy
For centuries, the residents of Château-Verdun lived on their own farms; In addition, forestry, as well as handicrafts and trade, were important sources of income.
history
The first written mention of the place name comes from the year 1166; the place and its castle were later the seat of a castellany of the Counts of Foix , which also included the neighboring villages of Albiès, Aston, Aulos, Bouan, Les Cabannes, Larcat, Larnat, Le Pech, Sinsat and Verdun . The medieval castle was besieged during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) and partially destroyed and - probably by order of Richelieu - finally razed to the ground in the 17th century.
Attractions
- Hardly anything is left of the medieval castle. Many stones were reused in the construction of the houses in the valley.
- The Château de Gudanes is a representative building from the mid-18th century - the only one in the upper Ariège Valley; it was built between 1741 and 1750 by Louis Gaspard de Salles , who at times owned up to six iron smelters and was dubbed the 'King of the Pyrenees' in Foix and the surrounding area. It consists of a central residential wing ( corps de logis ) and two lateral corner pavilions; In the roof area there are some porthole windows . The castle is privately owned and was recognized as a Monument historique in 1994 .
