Niaux is a French commune with 165 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region (until 2015: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Foix and the municipality association Pays de Tarascon, which was founded in 1994 . The residents call themselves Niausiens . The community is known nationwide for the Niaux cave .
geography
Niaux is located about 18 kilometers south of Foix on the left bank of the Vicdessos in the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Niaux is surrounded by the neighboring communities Tarascon-sur-Ariège in the north, Ussat in the northeast, Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains and Larnat in the east, Miglos in the southeast, Capoulet-et-Junac in the south, Lapège in the southwest and Alliat in the west and Northwest.

Economy and Infrastructure
There are two farms in the municipality of Niaux (sheep and goat farming).
The D8 road from Tarascon-sur-Ariège to Vicdessos runs through the municipality of Niaux . Three kilometers north-east of Niaux there is a connection to the RN 20, which has partly been expanded to two lanes . The nearest train station is in Tarascon-sur-Ariège on the railway line from Toulouse to Puigcerdà in Spain ( Ligne de Portet-Saint-Simon à Puigcerda (frontière) ).
