Quié is a French commune with 302 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Foix and the municipality association Pays de Tarascon, which was founded in 1994 . The residents call themselves Quiétois .

Quié is located about 15 kilometers south of Foix in the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . The community adjoins the town of Tarascon-sur-Ariège immediately to the west and stretches up the slope of a wooded mountain range. The peaks of the mountains in Quié reach heights of over 900 meters. The highest point in the west of the municipality is a point on the slope of the 1085 m high Cap de Lauzac with an altitude of 1040 meters . In the south-east, the community extends to the left bank of the Vicdessos river , which has dug itself deep into the mountain landscape, which is characterized by steep rock formations. Quié is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Tarascon-sur-Ariège in the north-west, north and east, Alliat in the south and Génat in the south-west.

Attractions

There are no churches or monuments in Quié. The Réseau de Sakany cave system is worth mentioning . Located just a few kilometers north of the Niaux cave , which is very popular with tourists , the tunnel system of the cave in Quié is six kilometers long and has a volume of 170 × 150 × 150 m.

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest employer in the municipality is the Sabart AERO TECH aluminum works on the banks of the Vicdessos. The foundation stone for the construction of the aluminum factory was laid in 1925. From 1929 the production of aluminum bars of various alloys started. In 2003 the Canadian Alcan Group took over the company (today part of Rio Tinto Alcan )

The two-lane Route nationale 20 ends near Quié as an extension of the A66 Autoroute from Toulouse towards the Pyrenees and Andorra . The close connection with the city of Tarascon-sur-Ariège offers good connections to the national transport network. The station in Tarascon-sur-Ariège is on the railway line from Pamiers via Foix and Ax-les-Thermes to Puigcerdà in Spain .
