Quérigut - place and castle rock

Quérigut (Occitan: Querigut ) is a place and a municipality in the south of France with 133 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region .

location

The place Quérigut is located in the Donetsan at an altitude of about 1210 meters above sea level. d. M. at a mountain stream of the same name. The health resort of Ax-les-Thermes is about 37 kilometers (driving distance) to the west; the cities of Foix and Pamiers are about 80 and 100 kilometers to the northwest. The Spanish border town of Puigcerdà , on the other hand, is only 50 kilometers to the south-west.

In the 19th century the place had mostly between 550 and 700 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture led to a loss of jobs at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries and, as a result, to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lowest values ​​of the last decades.

The inhabitants of Quérigut live mainly from agriculture, with livestock farming and thus milk and cheese production in the foreground, but viticulture is also being practiced again to a small extent. In addition, tourism - also in the form of renting holiday homes ( gîtes ) - plays an important role in the economic life of the small community.

history

The town, its Saint-Félix church and the castle were first mentioned in 844. In the 12th century, the area belonged to the Crown of Aragón , but Peter II gave it to the Counts of Foix in 1208 , who, however, succeeded them the marriage of Gaston IV to Eleanor , heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Navarre , and later neglected by her relations with the House of Albret . At that time the place and its castle were called Quier Agut ; the latter was besieged and destroyed by the Catalans in 1589. Under Henry IV the Donetsan was united with the French crown, but the clashes with the Spaniards continued until the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659).
