Ussat is a French commune with 322 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region (until 2015 Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Foix and the municipality association Pays de Tarascon founded in 1994 . The inhabitants are called usatois .

geography

The municipality of Ussat is located in the Pyrenees , 18 kilometers south of Foix and about 25 kilometers north of the border with Andorra . The Ariège flows through the 4.4 km² municipal area . At the end of a small side valley of the Ariège, the village of Ussat is flood-safe at around 500 m above sea level. The thermal baths Ussat-les-Bains to the south on the right bank of the Ariège belongs to the neighboring municipality of Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains. There is no bridge over the Ariège in Ussat. To get to the municipal area west of the river and there to the Grotte de Lombrives , the river bridges of neighboring municipalities must be used. To the northeast, southeast and west of Ussat rise partly wooded, imposing low mountain ranges with peaks over 1000 m above sea level. The highest point in the municipality is reached with the Cap de la Lesse in the west ( 1189  m ).

Ussat borders on the neighboring municipalities of Arnave in the northeast, Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains in the southeast, Niaux in the southwest and Tarascon-sur-Ariège in the northwest.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are three farms in Ussat (sheep and goat farming, feed cultivation).

On the left side of the Ariège , the RN 20 / E 9 runs from Tarascon-sur-Ariège to Puigcerdà in Catalonia; parallel to this, the railway line from Portet-Saint-Simon to Puigcerdà.
