Mijanès - the place and the river Bruyante

Mijanès ( Occitan Mijanes ) is a place and a municipality ( commune ) in the south of France with 59 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region .

location

The place Mijanès is located in the Donetsan at an altitude of about 1130 meters above sea level. d. M. at the river Bruyante . The place is framed by two mountains: Pic de Balbonne ( 2305  m ) and Roc Blanc ( 2546  m ). Ax-les-Thermes is about 30 kilometers (driving distance) to the west; the cities of Foix and Pamiers are about 72 and 92 kilometers northwest, respectively. The Spanish border town of Puigcerdà , on the other hand, is only 56 kilometers to the south-west.

In the 19th century the place had mostly between 450 and 600 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture led to a loss of jobs in the 20th century and, as a consequence, to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lowest values ​​of the last decades.

For centuries, the inhabitants of Mijanès lived mainly from agriculture, with livestock farming and thus milk and cheese production in the foreground. By the 18th century at the latest, there was an iron smelter and a forge, whose charcoal requirements could be produced on site, whereas the iron ore had to be brought in on the back of donkeys from a great distance. Nowadays, hiking and ski tourism play an important role in the economic life of the small community, whose empty houses have been partially converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

In 1986 a Bronze Age necropolis was discovered in the municipality . The small area of ​​Donetsan belonged to the Kingdom of Aragon for a long time until King Peter II gave it to his vassals, the Counts of Foix , in 1208 . The first written mention of the place name comes from the year 1390. With the marriage between Gaston IV and Eleanor of Navarre in 1436, relations with the Kingdom of Navarre became closer; Henry IV considered the Donetsan to belong to France.

Attractions

  • The place is a good starting point for hikes in the wooded Donezan region. In winter it functions as a ski station.
