history

While Poppi is now off the main traffic routes and is little known, it played an important role in the events of Tuscany between Arezzo and Florence and thus between Ghibellines and Guelphs in the 13th and 14th centuries as the headquarters of a noble family, the Guidi . Poppi is crowned by the castle of the Counts Guidi ( Castello dei Conti Guidi ), which dominates the city and the Casentino. In 1441 and thus comparatively late, Poppi came under the rule of the Republic of Florence , with which the expulsion of the Guidi was at the same time at the extreme end of the old feudal rule in Tuscany.

The name “Poppi” can be etymologically derived from the term “poplo”, meaning “hill” or “hill”, from the Tyrrhenian language era. Therefore it stands to reason that a settlement with this name was founded as early as the 8th century. However, Poppi is only mentioned in sources in the 12th century.
