Benedetto Buglioni

Benedetto Buglioni (* between December 20, 1459 and March 21, 1460 in Florence , †  March 7, 1521 in Florence) was an Italian sculptor and terracotta artist .

Life

Benedetto Buglioni was a son of the stone cutter Giovanni di Bernardo d'Antonio and brother of Francesco Buglioni, who was also a sculptor . He grew up near the workshop of Luca and Andrea Della Robbia and was probably inspired to do the same. According to Vasari , a woman working in Andrea Della Robbia's workshop gave him the secret of the glazed terracottas, which he then successfully imitated. It is much more likely, however, that he was trained in sculpture and thus also in glazing technology in the Della Robbia workshop, which was adjacent to his father's workshop. Since his later works also have strong influences from Antonio Rossellino , it cannot be completely ruled out that he also did an apprenticeship there. In any case, the fact is that he worked in the style of the Della Robbia and is responsible for ensuring that their glazing technique was also widely used outside of Florence.

The earliest independent work by Benedetto is documented for the year 1484, a "Christ in Limbo" , now lost , which he carried out for the Church of SS. Annunziata. Between 1487 and 1490, together with his brother Francesco, he made the Cappella del Santo Anello in the Cathedral of San Pietro in Perugia, of which only two busts of the prophets "David" and "Isaia" have survived. During this work, or immediately afterwards, he made a relief with the “Resurrection of Christ” for the altar of San Jacopo in Perugia , for which he was paid in 1490. In the same year, but no later than 1491, he opened his own workshop in Florence and, together with his brother, undertook the facade design on the Santuario di Santa Cristina in Bolsena on behalf of Cardinal Giovanni de 'Medici. The sculptural work carried out in the process, in particular the “grave figure of St. Christina”, are today regarded as his most important works. Following this work, Benedetto was active in numerous other cities, especially in Tuscany. In 1504 he was a member of the commission that decided on the future location of Michelangelo's "David" . Around 1508 he took the son of his father-in-law's cousin, Santi Tommaso di Michele, who later called himself Santi Buglioni , into his home, taught him his craft and instructed him in his technique.

style

Benedetto Buglioni left behind a rich oeuvre of largely undisputed works, which today are accompanied by a large number of largely recognized attributions. He is a direct follower of Della Robbia and comes very close in his art to Giovanni Della Robbia , with whom he may have studied together. Stylistically, he is also close to Antonio Rossellino, but is also visibly oriented towards Benedetto da Maiano , Desiderio da Settignano and Francesco di Simone Ferrucci . After taking over the glaze technique, he soon began to experiment with it. In contrast to the Della Robbia works, its glaze is often applied thinner and more unevenly and appears overall lighter and is also less translucent.
