Antonio Rossellino , actually Antonio Gamberelli (* 1427 or 1428 in Settignano , today in Florence, † 1479 in Florence ) was an Italian architect and sculptor . His stage name first caught on in art literature in the 16th century and is probably due to his head of red hair. He stepped forward with portrait busts and created the most important marble tomb of the early Renaissance for the Cardinal Archbishop of Lisbon, Jacob of Lusitania.

Life

Antonio Rossellino was the brother and also a student of the Italian sculptor Bernardo Rossellino . He worked mostly in Florence , where he mainly created marble tombs with many decorations. Giorgio Vasari described him and his brother Bernardo in the second part of his artist biographies.

Rossellino was one of the most important Italian sculptors of the 15th century. Working in actual bas-relief he made skilful use of light and shadow, moving smoothly from the sharp, higher relief of the foreground to the lower relief of the distance. Such works, which seemed to break the barriers between painting and sculpture, were widespread in the 15th century. Four Madonnas carved in marble reliefs date from the early days of his creative period, but many more are known.
