Andrea della Robbia
Andrea della Robbia (* 28. October 1435 in Florence , † 4. August 1525 ibid), a member of the family of sculptors della Robbia was a Florentine Renaissance - artists , who in tone worked. His father Marco di Simone belonged to the arte della lana , and his Uncle Giovanni, a notary, and the sculptor Luca , whose pupil he became , lived in the same household . After her father's death in 1448, Luca took Andrea's place, both of whom lived together for life. Of Andreas Brothers, Simone was the progenitor of today's Viviani della Robbia family . He was registered in the register of the arte dei maestri di pietra e legname since 1465 and was elected consul of the guild several times. In contrast to his brother, he did not receive any artistic training, but was able to carry out several assignments for Luca. After his death he had to cede his share of the house and workshop to Andrea.
Andrea soon reached an important position in his uncle's workshop, and he was able to take on his first independent commission in 1455: a Madonna, which may have been intended for a Medici villa, but whose traces have been lost. At first he stuck to the style of the company, which was influenced by his uncle, but his Madonnas had the baby Jesus on the right, Luca's on the left. A pronounced individuality cannot be determined in his early works. In 1458 he was accepted as an intagliatore (stone cutter) in the arte dei maestri di pietra e legname and thus laid the groundwork for later professional independence, as the collaboration with Luca initially became even more intensive. For some jobs, his uncle only seems to have worked on the design and left the implementation entirely to his nephew. Around 1470 Andrea seems to have completely taken over the management of the workshop; Luca demanded financial compensation and excluded Andrea from his inheritance (1471), since his teaching had already given him considerable wealth.
He developed glaze techniques and, in addition to small architectural decorations, also used this material to create sopra portals and large altarpieces . It is almost always high relief .
