Santa Maria delle Grazie is a small church in the Tuscan city of Arezzo . It is known for its loggia from the early Renaissance .

location

The church is located about a kilometer south of the old town of Arezzo on the Via Santa Maria delle Grazie named after her . Viale Mecenate leads directly from the city center onto Via Santa Maria delle Grazie .

History and building history

Already in antiquity there was a spring dedicated to the god Apollon and a spring sanctuary at this point , it is possible that the cult goes back to the Etruscan times. The source was known as Fons Tecta . Even after the Christianization of Italy, both residents of the city of Arezzo and foreigners made pilgrimages to this place in order to gain healing through the water. This fact was brought to the attention of Saint Bernardine of Siena , whereupon he destroyed the spring shrine on the occasion of a sermon here in 1428. He was two years later at Parri di Spinello , son of Spinello Aretino , the contract for the painting of a Madonna of Mercy ( Madonna delle Grazie ), according to the patron saint of the church.

The current church was built between 1435 and 1444. The builder was Domenico del Fattore , also called Domenico Faltore . The famous portico was created by Benedetto da Maiano , Giuliano da Maiano's brother , from 1478 to 1482.

Portico

In front of the facade is a portico, also known as a loggia . Da Maiano based its construction on models from Florence from 1478 to 1482 , such as the Ospedale degli Innocenti , created by Filippo Brunelleschi . The 14 columns supporting the hall , eight in the front row, follow a modification of the Corinthian order . The proportions of the harmoniously balanced construction lead to the art-historical assessment of the portico as "one of the most delicate creations of the early Renaissance".

Interior

The church was built as a single nave church . Its two bays are vaulted by cross ribs , the choir is closed polygonally, both of which give the building a late Gothic style character.

The high altar contains the above-mentioned painting Spinello, who created the picture after the commissioning until 1431. The frame of the reredos was created from marble , white and colored glazed terracotta from 1487 to 1493 by Andrea Della Robbia .

To the right of the church is another oratory dedicated to St. Bernardine of Siena , it was created after the saint's death from 1450 to 1456.

reception

Gabriele D'Annunzio mentions the loggia in his poem Le città del silenzio from 1903: "Bruna ti miro dall'aerea loggia che t'alzò Benedetto da Maiano."
