Hugo Sempilius

Hugo Sempilius (also Simpelius , English Hugh Sempill or Semple; * between 1594 and 1596 in Craigevar , Scotland , † September 29, 1654 in Madrid ) was a Scottish Jesuit and mathematician .

Sempilius joined the Jesuit order in 1615 and taught mathematics at the Scottish College of the Jesuits in Madrid ( Colegio Imperial de Madrid ) and was rector of the college at the time of his death. He wrote a collection of biographical information on a large number of mathematicians and their work from antiquity to his time in 12 volumes (De mathematicis disciplinis libri duodecim, 1635). That is why he is especially important as a mathematician.

The Simpelius lunar crater is named after him.
