Simpelius is an impact crater in the extreme south of the lunar front , southeast of Manzinus crater and southwest of Moretus . The rim of the crater is eroded and the inside is flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Scottish Jesuit and mathematician Hugo Sempilius .
