Eycheil ( Occitan : Eishèlh ) is a French commune with 550 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons , to the community association of Couserans-Pyrénées and to the canton of Couserans Ouest (until 2015: canton of Saint-Girons ). The inhabitants are called Eychailais / Eychailaises .

geography

Eycheil is located around 74 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Toulouse in the west of the Ariège department. The community consists of numerous hamlets, scattered settlements and individual farmsteads and is located on the Salat River . Eycheil is located within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are mountainous and forested. In terms of traffic, the community is on the D618.

Eycheil is surrounded by the neighboring communities Encourtiech in the northeast, Lacourt in the east and southeast, Moulis in the southwest and Saint-Girons in the west, northwest and northeast.

history

The castle Château de Chunaut , built by the Duke of Couserans, is mentioned in the 12th century . At times, copper was mined in mines. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Eycheil was within the canton of Saint-Girons from 1793 to 2015 . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801.
