The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the basin in 2005 after the hydrologist Gayle Lynn Dana (* 1953) from the Desert Research Institute at the University of Nevada, Reno , who was involved in environmental studies in the Antarctic dry valleys in five campaigns between 1993 and 2001 .
