The Fortress ( English for The Fortress is) a 300 m high-altitude plateau of sandstone known as Beacon Supergroup in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is divided into four ledges that are bordered by steep cliffs. The formation represents the watershed between this and the Upper Victoria Glacier northeast of the Webb Glacier and occupies the western half of the Cruzen Range .
The descriptive name was given to the plateau by participants in a campaign carried out from 1959 to 1960 as part of New Zealand's Victoria University's Antarctic Expeditions .
