Castelnau-Durban ( Occitan : Castèthnau de Durban ) is a French commune with 449 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons , the association of municipalities Couserans-Pyrénées and the canton of Couserans Est (until 2015: canton of Saint-Girons ). The inhabitants are called Castelnau-Durbannais / Castelnau-Durbannaises .
geography
Castelnau-Durban is located around 68 kilometers south of the city of Toulouse in the west of the Ariège department. The community consists of the village of Castelnau-Durban (until 1789 Castelnau de Durban), several hamlets and scattered settlements as well as individual farms. The village is on the Artillac River . Castelnau-Durban lies within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are mountainous and forested. The highest point is near Serre Nère in the south of the municipality. The D117 from Foix to Tarbes runs through the municipality.
Castelnau-Durban is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Montseron and Durban-sur-Arize in the north, La Bastide-de-Sérou in the northeast, Esplas-de-Sérou in the southeast and south and Rimont in the west.
history
In 1228 a castle is mentioned in a document. In the Middle Ages, Castelnau-Durban was part of the County of Foix. In 1562 there was a skirmish during the Wars of Religion that resulted in several deaths. On August 22, 1944, 1542 members of the Wehrmacht surrendered in Castelnau-Durban and were taken prisoner. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Castelnau-Durban was in the canton of Rimont from 1793 to 1801 and within the canton of Saint-Girons from 1801 to 2015 . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801. Castelnau-Durban reached today's expansion in 1826 with the merger of Castelnau-Durban and Cert.
