Fortified church of Montjoie-en-Couserans

Montjoie-en-Couserans ( Occitan : Montjòi de Coserans ) is a French commune with 1,082 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons , the association of municipalities Couserans-Pyrénées and the canton of Portes du Couserans (until 2015: canton of Saint-Lizier ). The inhabitants are called Montjolien / Montjoliennes .

geography

Montjoie-en-Couserans is located around 71 kilometers southwest of the city of Toulouse in the west of the Ariège department. The community consists of the villages of Audinac, Baliar, Lara, Les Baudis, Montjoie-en-Couserans and Thérech , numerous scattered settlements and individual farms. The river Baup crosses the community westwards and in parts forms the southern boundary of the community. Montjoie-en-Couserans is located within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are forested. The highest point in the municipality is the Tuc de Montcalivert . The village of Montjoie-en-Couserans is on the D218. The D117 from Foix to Tarbes runs through the south of the municipality.

Montjoie-en-Couserans is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Montardit in the north, Contrazy in the northeast, Montesquieu-Avantès and Lescure in the east, Rivèrenert in the southeast, Encourtiech in the south, Saint-Girons in the southwest, Saint-Lizier in the west and Gajan in the west and Northwest.

history

The bastide was built in the 12th or 13th century. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Montjoie-en-Couserans was within the canton of Saint-Lizier from 1793 to 2015 . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801. The municipality as it is today was created between 1790 and 1794 through the union of the municipalities of Audinac , Baliar , Lara and Montjoy . Until 1936 the community was called Montjoie. Since then it has had its current name.
