Castillon-en-Couserans ( Occitan : Castilhon de Coserans ) is a French commune with 400 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons , to the association of municipalities Couserans-Pyrénées and to the canton of Couserans Ouest (until 2015: canton of Castillon-en-Couserans ). The inhabitants are called Castillonnais / Castillonnaises .
geography
Castillon-en-Couserans is located around 83 kilometers southwest of the city of Toulouse in the west of the Ariège department. The community consists of the village of Castillon-en-Couserans on the river Lez, scattered settlements and farmhouses. Castillon-en-Couserans is located within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are mountainous and forested. In terms of traffic, the community is on the D4.
Castillon-en-Couserans is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Engomer in the north, Cescau in the northeast, Moulis in the east, Arrien-en-Bethmale in the southeast, Bordes-Uchentein in the south and Audressein in the west.
history
Finds show a settlement since the early days. In 1176 an administrator Odon de Castillon of the Count of Comminges is mentioned. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Castillon-en-Couserans was the capital of the canton of Castillon-en-Couserans from 1793 to 2015 . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801. Until 1958 the municipality was only called Castillon.
