Fornex ( Occitan Hornèths ) is a French commune with 113 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons and the canton of Arize-Lèze .
location
Fornex is located in the Massif du Plantaurel in the north of the Ariège department. The Arize River partially forms the eastern boundary of the municipality. The closest city is Pamiers , about 30 kilometers (as the crow flies) east-southeast ; the city of Toulouse is just under 70 kilometers to the north.
The community consists of several hamlets (hameaux) and individual farmsteads.
history
Fornex was one of the most important squares of the Foix-Rabat branch line of the House of Foix in the county of Foix in the Middle Ages . In 1263 a document mentions a Castrum de Furnellis . In addition to the Fornex castle, there was a second castle, the Château de Baillard . Only ruins remain from this castle. Fornex Castle remained in the possession of the Foix-Rabat until the 18th century and then came to the House of Sabran through marriage. In 1804 part of the castle burned down. Until the French Revolution, Fornex was part of the Kastlanei Camarade. The community belonged to the Mirepoix-Pamiers district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, it was from 1793 to 1801 part of the canton of Daumazan and from 1801 to 2015 part of the canton of Le Mas d'Azil (1793-1801 under the name of canton Mas d'Azis ).

In the 19th century the place had over 400 inhabitants. The increasing mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lows of recent times.
Attractions
- Château de Fornex castle ; the original building from 1263 is no longer preserved. The current building is mostly from the 15th-17th centuries. Century, partly from the 19th century. That is why the castle is classified as a monument historique .
- Saint-Antoine village church (formerly Saint-Saturnin); restored in the 19th century, with a steeple from 1902
