history
The discovery of a coin from Roman times proves an early settlement. The community itself was founded as a bastide in 1195. Until 1576 it was owned equally by the Bishop of Toulouse and the Count of Foix. It suffered severe devastation in the Wars of Religion in 1569. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Montardit was from 1793 to 2015 within the canton of Sainte-Croix-Volvestre . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801. The municipality has existed in its current size since 1888. At that time, part of the municipality was split off and incorporated into the new municipality of Lasserre .
