Cazavet ( Occitan : Casavèth ) is a French commune with 223 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons , to the community association of Couserans-Pyrénées and to the canton of Portes du Couserans (until 2015: canton of Saint-Lizier ). The inhabitants are called Cazavetois / Cazavetoises .

geography

Cazavet is located around 75 kilometers southwest of the city of Toulouse in the west of the Ariège department on the border with the Haute-Garonne department. The municipality consists of the villages of Cazaux and Cazavet , the hamlet of Salège and scattered settlements and farmsteads. Cazavet is located within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are forested. The highest point of the municipality is the Pic de l'Estelas in the west of the municipality. The D117 from Foix to Tarbes runs north of the municipality.

Cazavet is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Prat-Bonrepaux in the north, Caumont in the northeast, Montgauch in the east and southeast, Balaguères in the south and southwest, Urau (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the southwest and Francazal (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the west.

history

The castle, which was destroyed during the French Revolution, was built in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Cazavet was from 1793 to 2015 within the canton of Saint-Lizier . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801.
