Illartein ( Illartein ) is a French commune with 73 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons and the municipality of Couserans-Pyrénées . The inhabitants are called Illarteinais .
geography
The municipality of Illartein is located in the historic province of Couserans in the Pyrenees , 20 kilometers west of Saint-Girons and about 35 kilometers south-east of Saint-Gaudens on the Bouigane river , whose valley ( called Bellongue ) aligns along the main Pyrenees ridge and the sixth Kilometers to the east, Audressein flows into the Lez . The valley is framed by wooded heights that reach over 1400 m above sea level in the north and over 1700 m in the south, while the village of Illartein is about 565 m on the valley floor. On the southern boundary of the municipality, the highest point in the municipality is reached at the summit of the Pic de Sérau at 1721 m above sea level. The 3.97 km² municipal area is surrounded by the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park , but is not part of it. Illartein borders on the neighboring communities of Buzan in the north, Aucazein in the east, Bonac-Irazein in the southeast (point of contact), Antras in the south, Augirein in the southwest and Orgibet in the west.
Through Illartein there are regular stages of the Tour de France on the way to or from the Col de Portet-d'Aspet in the west .

Economy and Infrastructure
The formerly agricultural village of Illartein now lives mainly from tourism in the form of holiday home rentals. There is still a full-time farmer. In addition, a small wood processing company produces in Illartein.
The former Route nationale 618 (today's D618) runs through Illartein. It follows the course of the Bouigane river and connects the valley to the nationally important roads. The nearest motorway connection ( Autoroute A64 ) is in Saint-Gaudens , 35 kilometers away .
