The Col de Portet-d'Aspet is a mountain pass in the French Pyrenees . It is located in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitanie region . At an altitude of 1,069 m , the pass lies in the municipality of Portet d'Aspet and separates the valleys of the Ger (west) and Bouigane (east) rivers . The Col is part of the massif around the Pic de Paloumère . The department road D 618, which connects the villages of Aspet and Audressein ( Ariège ), leads over the pass .

Coming from Audressein or from the east, the route to the top of the pass is 18.14 kilometers long. Thereby 557 meters of difference in altitude are overcome. In the village of St. Lary there are still 5.9 kilometers left and the actual ascent begins with an average gradient of 6.8% (maximum: 10.6%). The ascent from the west begins in Aspet and is first completed on a short stretch of D 5 before reaching the D 618. Overall, the climb is 14.31 kilometers long with a 594 meter difference in altitude. On this route the pass starts right from Sengouagnet . The rest of the route from here is 4.4 kilometers long and the average gradient is 9.6% (maximum: 12.6%).

Tour de France

In 1910 the Col du Portet d'Aspet was crossed by the tour for the first time . The first winner of the mountain classification was Octave Lapize . The Portet d'Aspet has been a regular part of the Tour de France since the end of the Second World War , for the last time in 2018 (July 24th).

Fabio Casartelli

Memorial plaque in honor of Fabio Casartelli

In 1995 Fabio Casartelli fell into a mass fall on the descent from Portet and seriously injured his head. Despite an initially successful resuscitation, Casartelli died hours later in hospital from his injuries. In his honor there is a memorial plaque at the scene of the accident and a stele just above it . As you can see in pictures from the time of the accident, the road was secured by individual sharp-edged stones. In the meantime, a continuous wall free of sharp edges has been erected instead on the western ramp where the fatal fall occurred. The original boundary stones are still there on the east run.
