Heinrich Coerper

Pastor Heinrich Coerper (born March 3, 1863 in Meisenheim ; † July 8, 1936 in Lahr -Dinglingen) was a German clergyman and founder and leader of today's Liebenzeller Mission in Bad Liebenzell in the Black Forest .

Life

Coerper was born the seventh child of a pastor's family. After the Latin school in his hometown and from 1877 he attended the high school in Cologne, where he lived with his older brother Fritz. After graduating, he studied theology in Halle , from 1884 in Tübingen , Utrecht , Berlin and from 1886 in Bonn . In 1887 his military service followed with the Guard Fusilier Regiment in Berlin, where he served as a soldier at the funeral of the German Emperor Friedrich III. was present. In Berlin he was shaped by sermons by Rudolf Kögel and Adolf von Stoecker . Initially an enthusiastic humanist, he was decisively shaped in the following years by pietistic personalities such as Theodor Christlieb and Elias Schrenk , who inspired him to become an active Christian. In 1888/1889 Coerper worked as a teacher at the Johanneum Evangelist School in Bonn. From 1890 to 1894 he was the second pastor of the chapel community in Heidelberg , where he began extensive work among children and students and in 1895 became a co-founder of the German Christian Student Association . During this time he came into contact with English Christianity through Otto Stockmayer , Georg Müller and Hudson Taylor (founders of the China Inland Mission, today: Overseas Missionary Fellowship International [OMF]) and took part in events of the Keswick movement . After his marriage, Coerper held the pastoral position in Essen until 1897 , where he was elected chairman of the Blue Cross Association. Then he was pastor at the deaconess house in Strasbourg until 1899 .

On November 13, 1899, Coerper founded the “German branch of the English China Inland Mission ” in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst and on January 1, 1900, he published the German edition of the mission news sheet “Chinas Millions” for the first time. On April 5, 1902, the mission family moved to Liebenzell in the Black Forest because their house in Hamburg was terminated. In 1906 the name was changed to "Liebenzeller Mission in the Association of China Inland Mission", later to "Liebenzeller Mission".

In 1900 Coerper began training missionaries and missionary sisters , later also for work in Germany. This training is continued to this day in the theological seminar of the Liebenzell Mission and from 2011 as the Liebenzell International University . As early as 1900, under Coerper's leadership, the first missionary was sent to China and German missionaries sent from England were taken on. In 1903 the first self-trained missionaries followed. In 1906 work began in the South Seas ( Ponape , Mortlock Islands , Chuuk , Palau , Yap , Manus ) and in 1927 in Japan .

Coerper founded the "South German EC Association" in 1904 and was also its chairman until 1933, of today's " South West German Youth Association Decided for Christ " (SWD-EC). In 1910 he was co-founder and chairman of the neo-pietist "South German Association for Evangelism and Community Care" (from 1993 " South German Community Association ") based in Cannstatt . In 1933 Coerper united Christians and Christian circles in southern Germany to form the “ Liebenzeller Community Association ”.

Heinrich Coerper died on July 8, 1936 in Lahr-Dinglingen, his grave is located near the town church in Bad Liebenzell. The work of the Liebenzeller Mission was continued from January 1934 by Ernst Buddeberg , the son-in-law of his brother Fritz Coerper.

criticism

As early as 1915, Coerper commented negatively on Judaism: "Judaism is not a religion, it is a race." In 1932 he advised his fellow believers to vote for Hitler, which was controversial within the community movement. Because he was nationally conservative, loyal to the emperor and patriotic. A leader who fought against the Catholic center, the Weimar democracy and communism was therefore very convenient for him. He brushed aside the few doubts the Pietist had and, in keeping with the spirit of the times, congratulated Hitler on his election victory.
