Karl August Brodrück

Karl August Brodrück (born  July 23, 1815 in Seligenstadt ; †  November 9, 1866 in Darmstadt ) was a Hessian officer and military historian .

He attended high school in Hanau and joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment in his company in August 1831 through the mediation of the later Hessian Lieutenant General Heinrich Joseph von Weitershausen . From 1852 he taught war history at the Darmstadt Military School. In 1860 he was promoted to major .

In the 1860s he took part in various military-diplomatic conferences for the Grand Duchy of Hesse , including the Geneva Conference in October 1863 on measures to improve the care of the wounded in war . At the conference, also held in Geneva in August of the following year, he signed the first Geneva Convention as a representative of Hesse . Shortly after his return to Darmstadt, with the help of Grand Duke Ludwig III. from Hesse and near the Rhine a committee to prepare for the establishment of a Hessian Red Cross aid association, which began its work on October 27, 1864. At the first general meeting in November 1864, Brodrück was elected the first chairman of this association.

During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he fell ill with a heart condition, from which he died in the same year. A comprehensive work he had begun under the title “Basic features of lectures on the history of war and the theory of war” remained unfinished due to his death.

From 1843 he belonged to the Freemasons' Union and entered the Worms Lodge at the rebuilt Temple of Brotherly Love .

In the city of Hanau, Karl-Brodrück-Strasse bears his name.
