Heinrich Joseph Freiherr von Weitershausen (born February 25, 1792 on Gut Klein-Steinheim ; † November 16, 1863 in Darmstadt ) was a Lieutenant General of the Hessian Grand Ducal and commander of the Grand Ducal Hessian Army Division .

Life

origin

His father Georg Freiherr von Weitershausen was in Kurmainzer's military service. His older brother Karl (1789–1815) was initially in the Hessian and after the dissolution of the army in Nassau service . The brother later fell in Waterloo .

Military career

Weitershausen joined the "Kurprinz" infantry regiment of the Electorate of Hesse as a flag junior in September 1804 and was appointed ensign on October 26, 1806 . After the French conquered Hesse, the army was disbanded. Weitershausen first returned to his parents.

On April 23, 1807, he entered the service of the Grand Duke of Hesse as a second lieutenant in the fusilier battalion of the body brigade, and as such took part in the 1809 campaign against Austria. When the older officers were wounded early in the battle of Wagram , Weitershausen commanded a company . He became Premier Lieutenant on May 20, 1811 when he moved to Russia with the Grande Armée in 1812 . He came via Rügen and Tilsit to Vilna , where he belonged to the "Wreede" corps. When the corps withdrew in December, he came to Danzig . Weitershausen again commanded a company there. While defending the city, he earned the Legion of Honor Cross . On January 24, 1814, he became a captain in the "Prince Emil" regiment and took part in the war against France with the association in 1814/15 . The regiment fought on March 18, 1814 at St. Georges, on March 20, 1814 at Limonest and on June 24, 1815 at Strasbourg .

In long peace service he was battalion commander from 1832 to 1844 and then rose on July 26, 1844 to colonel and commander of the 1st infantry regiment. In 1848 he fought in Schleswig-Holstein and in 1849, as leader of the 1st Infantry Brigade, against the rebels in the Palatinate (capture of Worms on June 28, 1849) and in Baden . On January 1, 1853, he was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 1st Brigade. In October 1858 he received the Commander First Class of the Military and Civil Service Order of Adolph von Nassau . During the mobilization in 1859 he was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of the Grand Ducal Hessian Army Division. In this position he died on November 16, 1863 in Darmstadt. On September 24, 1863, he received the Grand Cross of the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Ludwig .
