The Mortlocks are one of five island regions of the Chuuk State of the Federated States of Micronesia . They belong to the Carolines archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean . From the Chuuk Atoll they extend in a south-easterly direction. The communities of the island region were statistically divided into the sub-regions Upper Mortlocks, Mid Mortlocks and Lower Mortlocks. In more recent publications this structure is no longer common. For a geographical grouping of the atolls (and the single island of Nama), a distinction is occasionally only made between upper mortlocks (Nama, Losap, Namoluk) and lower mortlocks (corresponds to the Mortlock Islands ).
The island region has an aggregate land area of 11.911 km² (according to other sources 12.72 km²). At the 2000 census there were 6,911 inhabitants on the atolls and individual islands.
The group's atolls were first sighted in 1795 by the English captain James Mortlock , who was on his way home from Australia to England on the merchant ship Young William .
The geographical group of islands Mortlock Islands (Nomoi Islands) consists of the three atolls in the southwest of the island region, Satawan , Etal and Lukunor .
