Losap is an inhabited atoll in the Caroline Archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean . Politically it belongs to the federal state of Chuuk of the Federated States of Micronesia and is counted there to the island region of Mortlocks .
geography
Losap is 81 km southeast of the Chuuk Atoll in the center and 110 km northwest of the Mortlock Islands (formerly the Nomoi Islands) in the southeast of the state. The closest land mass is the small neighboring island of Nama , 13 km northwest of Losap. The 10 × 6 km large atoll has a lagoon area of 28 km², while the land area of the 14 islands of the atoll is only about 1 km². The fringing reef is interrupted in several places in the west, but in the southeast of the atoll there is only one deep passage that allows entry into the lagoon . Losap has 882 inhabitants who are spread over the three villages of Pekias , Sotiw and Lukan . They speak a dialect of the Chuukesian language , which is one of the Micronesian languages .
Largest island is Laol in the northeast. Losap Island, just west of Laol, is 31 meters high. The island of Piis in the south reaches a height of 37 meters. The lagoon is up to 68 meters deep.

The southern and eastern groups are clearly separated by the Morappu Channel in the west of the atoll and the Morchan Channel in the east. The groups also correspond to the two communities of the atoll.

The atoll includes the municipalities of Losap (0.85 km², 445 inhabitants) in the east and Piis-Emwar (0.18 km², 427 inhabitants) in the south.
Losap includes a. Loal (Laol) Island, Losap Island and Oite Island (eastern group).
Piis-Emwar includes u. a. Pis Island, Alananubu and Talap Island (southern group, also referred to as Pis Islands ).
