Nomwin is an inhabited atoll in the Caroline Archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to the Chuuk state of the Federated States of Micronesia .

geography

Nomwin is located in the north of the state of Chuuk, 82 km north of the central Chuuk Atoll . It is 9 km southwest of the neighboring atoll Murilo , which geologically comes from the same seamount and with which it geographically forms the Hall Islands , and 36 km east of East Fayu . The Nomwin atoll is around 30 km long, up to 18 km wide and has a total area of ​​318 km². On the fringing reef are 16 islands with a total land area of ​​1.854 km², of which Nomwin Island in the south and Fananu in the east are the most important. The lagoon is up to 52 m deep and has an area of ​​almost 292 km².

The atoll belongs to the statistical island region of Oksoritod and there to the sub-region of Halls . It includes the two communities Fananu in the east with 355 inhabitants and Nomwin in the west of the atoll with 711 inhabitants. The uninhabited atoll East Fayu also belongs to the Nomwin community. The Nomwin atoll has a total of 1066 inhabitants (as of 2000) who speak a dialect of the Chuukesian language , which is one of the Micronesian languages .
