Chuuk is a state of the Federated States of Micronesia . It includes numerous islands and atolls in the western Pacific Ocean . Almost 50,000 people, almost half of the population of Micronesia, live in Chuuk. The state is striving for state independence and is therefore expected to hold an independence referendum in March 2022 .

General

The state of Chuuk is located in the mid-west of the Federated States of Micronesia. It covers a sea area that extends from west to east over about 660 km and from north to south up to 240 km. The westernmost land point of Chuuk is in Puluwat Atoll , the easternmost in Lukunor Atoll .

In the center of the area is the Chuuk Atoll ( Chuuk Islands ), which the state owes its name to. Chuuk's capital, Weno , is located on Moen , in the east of the Chuuk Atoll lagoon .

Chuuk borders the Micronesian states of Yap in the west and Pohnpei in the east.

Islands and atolls

Chuuk State has 294 islands and atolls.

In the center of the state lies the large atoll Chuuk (formerly Truk ) with the main island Moen and other relatively large islands in the lagoon . The nearby uninhabited atoll Neoch is also grouped with the central islands, as it belongs to the municipality of Uman in the Chuuk lagoon.
