Etal (sometimes also Ettal ) is an atoll in the group of the Mortlock Islands in the Central Pacific Ocean, part of the Carolines archipelago . Politically it belongs to the state of Chuuk of the Federated States of Micronesia and is counted there to the statistical island region of Mortlocks .
geography
Etal is 6 km north of the neighboring, much larger atoll Satawan and 14 km northwest of the atoll Lukunor, which is also part of the Mortlock Islands . From Chuuk Atoll in the center of the state, it is 245 km south east. Etal has the shape of a rounded triangle with a length of 6.5 km and a maximum width of 4 km. The area of the lagoon is about 16 km², whereas the land area is only 1.9 km². The atoll consists of 17 islands, most of which are located on the eastern and northeastern coral fringes. The only inhabited and largest island with 97 hectares is Etal in the southeast of the atoll, the second largest island is Parang in the far north. Unon is isolated in the west . Etal forms its own municipality with 267 inhabitants (status: 2000). The islands are densely overgrown with coconut palms and breadfruit trees .
