Lukunor is an atoll in the Pacific Ocean . Geographically, it belongs to two other islands Mortlock Islands (Laws Islands) in the archipelago of the Caroline Islands and politically on the island region Mortlocks in the state of Chuuk the Federated States of Micronesia .

geography

Lukunor is 8 km east of the much larger atoll Satawan and 14 km southeast of the atoll Etal, which is also part of the Mortlock Islands . The area of the Lukunor lagoon is 55 km², whereas the land area is only 2.8 km². The outer rim of the reef is around 39 km long. Including the reef areas, the total area is 67 km². On the eastern rim of the reef lies the largest island, Likinioch , with 1.28 km² , on the western, the next smaller island, Oneop. Of the 18 islands in the atoll, many are uninhabited due to their small size. The two communities on Lukunor - Lekinioch in the east and Oneop in the west - have a total of 1432 inhabitants (as of 2000).

The atoll has an almost closed fringing reef, which largely falls dry at low tide and is wider in the north. The only entrance to the lagoon is in the southwest between the main island Likinioch and the neighboring island of Soponur to the west . Most of the islands lie along the south side of the atoll, between Soponur and the second main island, Oneop, in the west, there are a dozen islets. Two other small islands, Kurum and Piasa, lie northwest of Likinioch. Apart from the two main islands, which are also community centers, only the island of Piasa shows signs of settlement on the satellite image.
