The Münchner Freiheit underground station is a station on the Munich underground in the Schwabing district . It was opened on October 19, 1971 and renovated from 2008 to 2009 with a new lighting concept by Ingo Maurer .

description

The station is located under the Münchner Freiheit square, which gives it its name, between Leopoldstrasse and Alt-Schwabing. Here at the northern end of trunk line 1 , the lines U3 and U6 separate in their further course to the north. That is why the facility has four tracks and two central platforms. The U3 line runs on the two outer tracks, the U6 on the inner ones. The line bands are shown in the corresponding colors.

The rear rail walls of the station consist of lime-green slats that zigzag upwards. The pillars are clad with blue tiles and also illuminated in blue from above. Apart from recesses for the fluorescent tubes, the ceiling itself is completely covered with square mirrors , and the floor is covered with reflective granite slabs. There is a work of art by Jürgen Reipka at the tunnel entrances . Both platforms can be reached from the mezzanine floor via escalators and fixed stairs in the middle of the platform as well as an elevator at the north end. The mezzanine floor, on which there are several shops, has level access to the surface as well as direct access to a neighboring department store. On the surface above, buses and tram line 23 stop under a striking roof structure consisting of white and lime green elements. This is supported by 18 columns and is modeled on a stalactite cave.

The renovation, which was carried out as part of the construction of tram line 23, which ends at Münchner Freiheit, completely changed the appearance of the station. The back track walls were previously made of gray fiber cement panels , the pillars were not illuminated, the floor, like many other Munich subway stations, was covered with the "Isarkiesel" motif and the ceiling was covered with aluminum slats in which the individual lights were. The traffic areas on the mezzanine floor have been made more spacious and clearer, and some shops have been added. Of the old shops, only the pharmacy and the kiosk remained, which were reopened elsewhere on the mezzanine floor. The roof on the surface was also erected during the renovation and replaced a concrete roof.

The Münchner Freiheit underground station, along with four stations of the Olympia underground , has been a listed building since 2020 .
