The Goetheplatz underground station in Munich opened on October 19, 1971 and was the terminus of the U3 and U6 until 1975. It is a special station because at 135 meters it is longer than all other stations at 120 meters. The main part of the train station is under Lindwurmstrasse and only the northern part is under Goetheplatz. The back track walls consist of blue-gray fiber cement panels through which the blue line strip runs. The pillars were covered with tiles in different shades of green. The ceiling does not have a light band, but individual fluorescent tubes, for which there are extra holes in the ceiling panel. The floor is laid out with an Isar pebble motif, which should reflect the light. At the southern end one reaches a barrier floor via escalators and then Lindwurmstraße. Goetheplatz can be reached at the northern end. In this station you can hear classical music (over loudspeakers) all day.
The shell of the tunnel from Sendlinger Tor to Goetheplatz - including the train station - was completed between 1938 and 1941 and was intended to be an S-Bahn tunnel. Further work was discontinued due to the war, the shell served as an air raid shelter until the end of the war. The tunnel was re-used to build the subway.
