The Garching underground station is an underground station in the city of Garching near Munich . It is located on the main line 1 of the Munich subway and is served by the U6 line. The Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft , which operates the subway in Munich, uses the internal abbreviation GR for the station .
history
As part of the line between Garching-Hochbrück and Garching Research Center , the station was opened on October 14, 2006. The city of Garching was the client for the construction of this route. Before that, Garching was the only neighboring town in Munich that was not connected to rail traffic.
Location and surroundings
The train station is centrally located in Garching under the Maibaumplatz and Bürgerplatz. At the stop, the federal highway 11 , which crosses Garching from north to south and is called Münchener Straße in the area of the train station, is crossed in a west-east direction.
The next train station into town is Garching-Hochbrück train station, 1827 meters away . Shortly before reaching this station, the line comes to the surface. In the opposite direction, after 2560 meters, you reach the Garching-Forschungszentrum station , where the U6 ends. The route there runs in sections above ground. The Marienplatz station in Munich's city center is about 15 kilometers away and be reached by car in 23 minutes.

The station, which is around 17 meters deep, consists of two tube platforms that are connected at the ends by two crosscuts. An escalator and a fixed staircase lead from the platform ends to the surface. The western staircase, which also has an elevator, leads via a mezzanine floor that houses a baker to the surface to the Bürgerplatz, with the stairs ending under a building. At the east end you reach the maypole square.
layout
The walls are covered with wall panels that lie on top of each other like scales and are kept in Garching's city colors. In the western part of the station the colors red and white dominate, in the eastern part the colors green and white predominate. There are also works of art and mirrors on the walls behind the tracks. The "A" of the "Garching" lettering was originally designed based on the atomic egg , corresponding to the appearance in Garching's lettering at the time. For the 10th anniversary of the subway station, the lettering was replaced by the current Garching logo in October 2016. The fluorescent tubes that illuminate the platform, which is lined with granite slabs, are located between the sheds. At the entrance to the Bürgerplatz and in the cross passages there are showcases that are equipped with changing exhibits.
traffic
The U6 serves the stop every 20 minutes and every 10 minutes during rush hour.
You can change to bus line 230 to Ismaning and to the research center, to line 293 to Hochbrück and to Auensiedlung in Munich and to line 290, which runs within Garching and stops three times above the train station on its route.
