Harald Scherf

Harald Scherf (born October 19, 1933 in Bremen ; † November 30, 2008 in Hamburg ) was a German economist , statistician and university professor.

Life

Harald Scherf was the son of a chemist who ran a drugstore in Bremen Neustadt . He had two older sisters who, like himself, came from his father's first marriage. Harald Scherf was born as a twin, his twin sister died shortly after birth. His mother also died shortly after the twins were born. The father entered into a second marriage, in which three sons were born, among them the future mayor of Bremen Henning Scherf .

Harald Scherf was sickly as a child, but already played chess at the age of four and performed very well as a student. “We were always bullied with him. He himself sometimes let us know and demonstrated that we were not nearly as intelligent as he, ”said Henning Scherf about his older brother.

After graduating from high school, Harald Scherf studied mathematics at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. He also studied economics with the economic theorist Erich Schneider . In 1964 he was promoted to Dr. sc. pol. PhD. In 1967 he was with Scripture studies on the theory of inflation habilitation .

He was offered a professorship at the University of Hamburg in 1968. Scherf's area of ​​expertise was inflation and business cycle theory . He taught statistics and economics and was director of the Institute for Statistics and Econometrics . In 1998 he retired for health reasons.

For the last ten years of his life, Scherf lived in seclusion with his second wife in Hamburg. He has two sons from his first marriage and a daughter from his second marriage. On November 30th, 2008 he died with his family after suffering from cancer for a long time.
