The underground station Garching-Forschungszentrum (abbreviation of the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft : GF ) is an underground station in the University and Research Center Garching , a district of the city of Garching near Munich . It is located on the trunk line 1 of the Munich subway and is the northern end point of the U6 line.

history

At the end of the extension of the U6 from what was then the terminus at Garching-Hochbrück to the research center, the station went into operation together with the latter on October 14, 2006. It was built using the cut-and-cover method. The city of Garching was the client for the construction of this route.

Location and surroundings

The underground station is located under a green area next to Boltzmannstraße, the central north-south axis of the research center, in which, among other things, the faculty building of the Technical University of Munich , institutes of the Max Planck Society , the Atomei and other research and teaching facilities are located . The Neue Mitte / Galileo building complex is currently under construction right next to the underground station .

The neighboring Garching underground station , which is located under the Garching town center, is 2560 meters away. The route there runs in sections above ground. The distance to Munich city center ( Marienplatz station ) is around 17.5 kilometers and a journey time of 26 minutes.

Station complex

construction

The station is located in a simple lower position about seven meters below the surface and has a central platform, from which three staircases lead directly to the surface without a mezzanine. The middle one is equipped with an elevator, while an escalator is installed next to the stairs at the two exits at the platform ends.

There is not a parking facility behind the station, as is usual at terminal stations, but only a few meters of track that serves as a slip path. Since it is not possible to turn around behind the station, the trains usually stop at platform 2 after their arrival until the return journey.

layout

The rear rail walls of the station are clad with mirrors, to which 26 panels are attached, depicting important inventions by famous people related to Munich, such as Albert Einstein , Rudolf Diesel and Max Planck . For this reason there is no line tape here, the name of the station is only written on the signs on the platform. The 26 panels are melon yellow, blue and green and are around eight by three meters in size. They were designed by the Munich design agency Haak & Nakat. The honoring of Claude Dornier and Willy Messerschmitt with plaques sparked some controversy in the run-up to the opening, as both used concentration camp prisoners in their plants during the Second World War. The platform is laid out with granite slabs and is illuminated by ten chandeliers, each with twelve lamps arranged in a star shape. The ceiling is made of concrete, in which a wave-shaped relief is milled. The stairs are each covered with a green concrete structure that can be accessed from the rear. At the middle staircase there are two holes in the station ceiling that let daylight fall into the station.

traffic

The underground line U6, whose final stop is the train station, serves the stop every 10 minutes on weekdays, every morning and evening and every 20 minutes on weekends.

Bus line 230, which crosses Garching and connects Ismaning on the other bank of the Isar to the research center, bus line 292, which leads via Garching and Garching-Hochbrück to Oberschleißheim, and bus line 690, which continues north to Neufahrn, stop at the surface near Freising and Eching . There are also park-and-ride parking spaces in the area of the train station .
