Fayu , also Fayo , also known as Lütke Island during the German colonial era , is an atoll in the Carolines archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to the Chuuk state of the Federated States of Micronesia . The atoll is often referred to as East Fayu to avoid confusion with the Micronesian atoll West Fayu .

geography

Fayu is located in the north of the state, around 100 km north of Chuuk Atoll and 36 km west of Nomwin Atoll in the Hall Islands ; despite its proximity, it is no longer geographically counted among the Hall Islands. Fayu is 2.7 km long in north-south direction and up to 1.4 km wide in east-west direction. It has a total area of 2.5 km² and consists mostly of the reef platform , there is also a small and shallow lagoon and two closely spaced islands on the eastern coral fringing with a total land area of only 40 hectares . In 1946 a land area of 37.7 hectares was mapped out.

The atoll, which is now uninhabited, used to be inhabited. In 1860 the population was estimated at 50.

administration

The islands belong to the statistical island region of Oksoritod , sub-region of Halls , and there to the municipality of Nomwin.
