Hjordkær ( dt .: Jordkirch ) is a Danish place with 1606 inhabitants in the Aabenraa municipality , Region Syddanmark . The village church, a late Gothic brick and field stone building, forms the center of Hjordkær Sogn .

Hjordkær has grown together with the neighboring settlement of Nübel over the past few decades. In contrast to many other places in the area, the population has grown continuously in the 20th century (1860: 785 Ew .; 1921: 1085 Ew.), Mainly due to the proximity to Aabenraa. Other neighboring towns are (clockwise): in the south Ensted (German Enstedt ), Bjolderup and Ravsted (German Rapstedt ), in the west Hellevad (German Hellewatt ) and in the north Egvad (German Ekwatt ) and Rise (German Ries ) .

history

The wheel grave from Hjordkær was moved to Rødekro . Hjordkær was first mentioned in 1196 as Hiortteker . The name Hjordkær is interpreted as a swampy area (Kær) with deer (Hjort). In the younger German name, which is first recorded in 1684, reference is made to the church. The same phenomenon can be found at Rabenkirchen / Ravnkær in fishing, otherwise kær mostly became kjer in German .

The old Jutian main trade route Ochsenweg runs through the community . The Court Toldsted (dt. Tollstedt ) near the village Nübel there was an important customs office for the well into the 19th century, major cattle trade.

Economy and Transport

As a Geest community not endowed with rich soil, Hjordkær was never particularly wealthy. For a long time the cultivation of rye and barley was the most important branch of agriculture.

However, numerous craft businesses and a machine factory have long shaped the community. The proportion of commuters is high, with many working in the neighboring towns of Bollersleben, Rothenkrug and Aabenraa.

The E 45 motorway runs east of the village . The well-developed secondary route 443 connects Hjordkær with Aabenraa and Tønder .

As early as the 1860s, Hjordkær received a train station, around which a large settlement soon formed. Like many stations on the Flensburg – Fredericia railway line , the Hjordkær station was closed in 1974 and the station building demolished in 1996. The nearest train station is five kilometers north in Rødekro .
