history

The old Johanneum in Bonn

The Johanneum Evangelist School was founded on October 21, 1886 in Bonn . The founders were the theology professor D. Theodor Christlieb (1833–1889) and the evangelist Elias Schrenk (1831–1913). They wanted to put well-trained helpers at the side of the then overwhelmed pastors. Since it was founded, the Johanneum has been close to the “inner-church Reformation Pietism ”. In 1893 the company moved to Barmen (now part of Wuppertal ). Many friends of the Johanneum lived there in the many spiritually lively communities. From 1920 to 1927 the YMCA secretary school was affiliated to the Johanneum before it found its home in Kassel (today: YMCA University ). After the Second World War , the rebuilding of the largely destroyed buildings was due. In 1965 the “old Johanneum” had to give way to the construction of a motorway exit (A 46, Wuppertal-Barmen exit); since then, the buildings still in use today have existed near the north park . A total of around 1500 people have been trained in the Johanneum so far.

Base of the Johanneum

The new building in Wuppertal

The biblical-theological basis of the Johanneum wants to develop for our time, which was declared to be groundbreaking when the seminar was founded. Here are some excerpts:

“Jesus Christ entrusted his church with various gifts for the service of the testimony in preaching and diaconia . We are called to preach the gospel primarily to our own people. The slogan of the Johanneum: The Son of Man has come to search for and save what is lost ( Luke 19:10 LUT ) above all points to people who do not believe in Jesus, because without faith in him we are lost forever . The Spiritually effected witness of God's revelation in Jesus Christ is entrusted to us in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. As the eternal Word, Jesus Christ is the Lord of the written word given to us through the called witnesses. Only from Jesus Christ can we recognize and testify to the truth of the gospel, which has its center in the word of the cross, through the Holy Spirit. That is why we, like the founders of the Johanneum, with the reformers and the revival movements based on them, profess Holy Scripture as the only source of faith and knowledge. "

education

The Johanneum is a theological seminar for missionary youth and community work . Around 15 young men and women are accepted into the training every year. The course is intended to prepare for the full-time preaching service in the Evangelical Church and its affiliated free works and associations. Training at the Johanneum takes four years. The acquired qualification is only recognized by the church.

The three years of seminar training in Wuppertal are followed by the consecration for full-time preaching service and the year of recognition, which is also the first year of employment.

The lessons include the following subjects: German language and literature , New Testament Greek , Old Testament , New Testament , dogmatics , ethics , church history , ascetics , homiletics , pastoral care , psychology - pedagogy - sociology , music , sport .
