Life

After a national title as a driver in a Suzuki RG 500 , Burgess became a Grand Prix mechanic in the early 1980s and celebrates his first GP victory with Suzuki driver Randy Mamola . In 1984 he switched to the Honda team of Freddie Spencer and team principal Erv Kanemoto . 1986 Burgess rose to the position of chief technician in the Honda factory team.

Wayne Gardner was the first driver who, with Burgess as a race engineer , was able to win the world title in the class up to 500 cc in 1987 . Five titles followed with Mick Doohan from 1994 to 1998 . After Doohan's retirement from active racing, Burgess Valentino Rossi also led to five consecutive titles in the premier class of motorcycle racing between 2001 and 2005 . The sixth and seventh followed in 2008 and 2009 .

After almost 20 years with Honda, Burgess joined Yamaha in 2004 with Rossi . For the 2011 season he followed Rossi to Ducati . Burgess is considered to be the mastermind behind Rossi's extraordinary successes.

In the 2013 season, Rossi moved back to Yamaha, and this time Burgess followed him as crew chief. In November 2013, after the end of the GP season, Rossi announced the end of the collaboration. Rossi gave the reason for the desire for a new motivation boost, which would be triggered by a new crew chief.

The "80:20 theory" comes from Burgess, according to which 80% of the success of a racing driver is the driving ability and 20% the performance of the motorcycle.
