Christian Raymond (born December 24, 1943 in Avrillé , France ) is a former French cyclist who was active in the 1960s and 1970s.

Athletic career

amateur

Raymond was initially active as a road cyclist in the amateur field and appeared in the results lists of major road races from 1962 on. At the Criterion Miramas (La Touloubre) in the south of France, he achieved his first notable victory. The 1.78 m tall Raymond celebrated his most successful year as an amateur in 1964, when he won the Route de France , the Tour de France for amateurs, among others . At the road world championships in 1964 he was fourth, he was also used at the Olympic Games in Tokyo , where he was 95th of the individual road competition among 107 active athletes.

Professional driver

In 1965 Raymond moved to the professional paddock and received his first professional contract with the French cycling team Peugeot-BP-Michelin , where the German Winfried Bölke was also under contract. In 1966 and 1967 Eddy Merckx was also one of his colleagues. Raymond achieved one of his first professional victories in 1966 at Kriterium in the French Massiac . In the same year he also contested his first Tour de France , where he was 54th out of 82 ranked. By 1974 he was able to place seven times in the Tour, the best result he achieved in 1971 as 32nd. He won his only Tour stage in 1970. That year, he was third for the only time on the podium of the French road championships. Raymond was ranked twice at the world road championships for professionals: in 1969 as 53rd and 1970 as 23rd. In 1975 Raymond drove his last professional races, a year earlier he had switched from Peugeot to the French cycling team Gan-Mercier.

In the 1970s Raymon also started in track races , in which he reached a third place in the 1973 World Standing Championship .
