Route de France
The Route de France was a cycle race that was held annually as a stage race between 1951 and 1990 .
The race was organized by the newspaper Route et piste as a small Tour de France for amateurs and independents - riders without ties to a professional cycling team . With this concept, it was in competition with the Tour de l'Avenir , which had been held since 1961 and which was also organized for amateurs by the Tour de France organizer ASO . Route et piste also organized the Paris – Nice long-distance journey and the Étoile des Espoirs during this period . Route de France took place in Auvergne , near Vichy , and often included a mountain finish on the Puy de Dôme .
The race is to be distinguished from the Route de France feminine in women's cycling .
