Ernst Rudolf Baerwind (born February 11, 1910 in Mannheim ; † November 12, 1982 there ) was a German painter .

Live and act

Baerwind studied at the art academies in Munich , Berlin and Paris .

In the 1950s and 1960s, the painter, who lived in Mannheim and Paris, was one of the few German artists with an international reputation. In 1959 he organized the first Franco-German art exhibition in Munich and Paris. In Mannheim he founded the “Symposium of the Arts” (Bismarckstrasse, square L 7).

Baerwind's work was initially based on early German Expressionism . After a surrealist phase he was influenced by Informel in Paris and then found the International Style .

In 1955 and 1959, Baerwind spent several months in the Mannheim state prison, as he was accused of "sexual acts between persons of the male sex", which was then punishable under Section 175 .

In 1980 the Kunsthalle Mannheim organized a large retrospective on his 70th birthday. In July 2010 a publication “Painters and more” was published, which describes Baerwind as a promoter of culture, artist and person.

Honors

Baerwind was made an honorary member of the academies in Rome and London and received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 1977 . In 1970 he was awarded the Prix ​​National at the 2nd Festival International de Peiture in Cagnes-sur-Mer, and in 1972 the Grand Prix international de France . The city of Mannheim honored him with the Schiller plaque in 1975 .
