Massive is a commercially sold software synthesizer from Native Instruments that is used in audio production. It belongs to the group of wavetable synthesizers and offers, among other things, several oscillators, filters and effects as well as an extensive system for modulating various parameters. The software can be used as a VST plug-in within a digital audio workstation or as a standalone program. Massive has been used in numerous music productions since its release in 2007 and is one of the most widespread software synthesizers in the electronic music genre.

Sound synthesis

The sound of Massive is mainly formed by three oscillators, for each of which one of the 89 integrated wavetables can be selected. The selection ranges from conventional sine and sawtooth waves to more complex waveforms that have more complex sound properties. For each oscillator, the wavetable position, intensity, input gain and pitch can also be set individually. The effect of the intensity is determined by the selected wavetable mode. In the standard setting (“Spectrum”) the controller gradually reduces the overtones and is therefore comparable to a low-pass filter. In "Formant" mode, the formant of the sound is changed and in "Bend" modes the waveform can be stretched or compressed.

A fourth oscillator creates different types of noise and has less configuration options than the above.

The modulation oscillator is the fifth oscillator and differs from the others in that it does not produce a sound of its own, but enables rudimentary ring and frequency modulation .

The generated sound can be changed by two filter, effect and insert units. The filters that can be selected include classic low-pass and high-pass filters as well as less conventional variants such as Double Notch (double notch filter ) and Scream (combination of low-pass and feedback). The range of effects and inserts includes various types of distortion , delay and reverb .

modulation

The vast majority of the parameters within Massive can be modulated . Four envelopes , four LFOs ( Low Frequency Oscillators ) and eight macro buttons are available to the user . In addition, MIDI data, e.g. Use e.g. velocity or aftertouch values as modulation sources. The LFOs can also be used in "Performer" or "Stepper" mode, which allows the creation of complex modulation rhythms. Since all modulation sources can influence any number of parameters and most parameters can be assigned up to three modulation sources, there is a multitude of possibilities to change the sound dynamically.

All buttons and controls affected by modulation are marked by colored rings or bars that indicate the degree of modulation.

Trivia

The name of the EP " 100% No Modern Talking " by Knife Party goes back to the wavetable "Modern Talking" in Massive, which was used many times by different producers at the time of publication.
