history

The community began in the 9th and 10th centuries. The first church buildings are known from 950, but the place it is today did not exist then. This place with a small wooden church was first hit by the plague and later by leprosy in the 12th century , depopulated and destroyed. The latter was finally fought by means of a leper colony in Tourondel in the east of the village. The survivors then settled nearby at an Augustinian monastery . The place developed from simple wooden huts around 1300 until the 16th century, when the church was built. During the Huguenot Wars , the area was the scene of some clashes between Catholics and Protestants. The protagonists here were on the Catholic side the Baron de Treignac , Louis de Pompadour , and on the Protestant side the Viscount de Ventadour . The fighting finally escalated to the extent that Louis de Pompadour set fire to the Monédièren to drive the fighters and marauding gangs out of the mountains. The result was frightening, forest and arable land as well as smaller places were burned in over 80 kilometers in the round, the place Saint-Jacques des Monédières disappeared completely from the map. The Protestants were defeated, but the economic consequences were immense and are still felt today.
