Millevaches en Limousin Regional Nature Park
The Millevaches en Limousin Regional Nature Park ( French Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin ) is located in the French departments of Corrèze , Creuse and Haute-Vienne , in the Limousin region .
The nature park, founded in 2004, covers an area of 314,300 hectares. 113 municipalities with 39,000 inhabitants form the park, five more are associated. The park administration is based in Gentioux-Pigerolles ( 45 ° 47 ′ N , 2 ° 0 ′ E, ).
The nature park essentially comprises the Plateau de Millevaches , a hilly high plateau at an altitude of 400 to 1000 meters. The highest peaks are in the southwest of the area, in the so-called Massif des Monédières . The area has remained very close to nature and is relatively sparsely populated. It consists of densely forested areas, raised bogs , heathlands and pastures . Due to the geological structure of granite rock , it has a great wealth of water. Many important rivers of the French Massif Central have their source here , such as
- Creuse ,
- Taurion ,
- Maulde with its Lac de Vassivière reservoir (around 1000 hectares of surface),
- Vienne ,
- Vézère ,
- Corrèze ,
- Diège .
Interesting animal populations, which find their habitat in the nature park, derive from this abundant water resources: trout , mussels and the otter , which is also documented in the park's logo . A large number of migratory birds also find shelter here every year.
