history

At the time of the Roman occupation, the area covered with impenetrable forests served as a refuge for the Druids who organized the resistance against the invaders. Julius Caesar had the forest set on fire, which had been on fire for months. Only in the Middle Ages did the monks of Treignac patiently reforest the Monédières . During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, Baron von Treignac, Louis de Pompadour , remained faithful to the Catholic denomination , while his powerful neighbors joined Protestantism . His enemies attacked the Monédières and plundered its territories. Baron Pompadour used Caesar's tactics again and set his forests on fire. The fire stretched over 80 kilometers, ruining the baron's possessions but forcing the Huguenots to retreat.

vegetation

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the area was covered by heather vegetation. Only with the decline in intensive pasture management did the natural growth of birch and mountain ash get under way, to which the artificial reforestation of conifers finally joined. Nevertheless, the heather remains a characteristic element of the Monédières landscape.
